For untouched nature you have to go to Norway. Do you want to experience Norway in a very unique way? Then go on an adventure with The Kayak Trip for a week. Board a sea kayak and sail some 120 kilometers across Norway’s deepest fjord. Sailing, wild camping, enjoying nature and adventure: this is The Kayak Trip!
What is the concept?
The Kayak Trip is for the adventurers, for the nature lovers and for the sports enthusiasts. During The Kayak Trip, you will embark with a guide and paddle for a week in a professional sea kayak over the Sognefjord, Norway’s deepest fjord and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The nature here is impressive. The mountains around the fjord are high, the views are amazing and the places where you spend the night are idyllically beautiful. Enough superlatives to describe this unique experience, but only when you set up your tent after a day on the water in the middle of nowhere and see the sun set between the trees… then you understand the feeling.
Who is The Kayak Trip for?
Let’s make it clear: everyone can join The Kayak Trip. If your heart beats faster from Norway, nature, the water, back-to-basic camping and sports activities, then this trip is really something for you.
A basic condition is of course useful, but if you have little or no knowledge of kayaking, that is not a problem at all, because on the first day of the trip you will learn the techniques of sea kayaking. You will receive theory and practical lessons in the base camp, and these training courses enable you to complete the 6-day tour with a guide without any problems. The basecamp is located in a separate bay so that you can master the technique well before you really hit the road and get some more wave action.
Wild camping along the route
If you Google the Sognefjord, you will see that the fjord loops through the landscape. From a base camp you leave for the most beautiful spots along the water and your camping gear goes with you during the trip in a waterproof storage space in your kayak. Depending on the level of the group and the weather conditions, you will cover a total of approximately 120 kilometers on the water in that week.
During the week you sleep in a tent, and you camp where you have arrived at the end of the day. Wild camping is allowed anywhere in Norway, so the guide will look for the best place to set up camp every evening. There is no electricity in the wilderness, so you cannot charge your devices during the journey. So bring an old-school mobile phone with a long battery life or provide a power bank for your smartphone.
The route of The Kayak Trip
There is a weekly schedule for The Kayak Trip, but changing weather conditions must always be taken into account. Technically, you are at sea, so the route can be adjusted or discontinued due to wave or wind.
On the first day you will arrive at the base camp and you will receive training to master kayaking. The next day you leave the quiet bay and head up the Sognefjord, towards the Aurlandsfjord. You will spend the night there. The next day you will paddle for several kilometers and leave the water to climb the Breiskrednosi, an impressive mountain about 1160 meters high. After a walk of about 20 kilometers you spend the night in Dyrdal Bay at the end of the day.
On days 4 and 5 your legs can recover from the walk, because these days you mainly go out in a kayak. From Aurlandsfjord you will paddle back to the Sognefjord and will sail along the southern shore to the next place to pitch your tent. On day 5 you cross the lake again and the journey continues towards the Lustrafjord, a little further inland. The next day you sail towards Ornes. Here you will land to visit a UNESCO-listed stave church, have lunch and soak up some culture. After lunch, get back in your kayak and set sail for a new place to stay overnight. After this you will sail back to the base camp and you can enjoy the Sognefjord one last time at a leisurely pace. The next morning you leave early to travel back to the Netherlands.
Food and drink
Everything has to go in the kayak, so you get a compact cooking set with which you can prepare simple meals. You can bring your own food and drinks or book a survival food pack. It contains compact and nutritious meals that can be prepared quickly. You can replenish your supply at special water points along the route for fresh drinking water. You will be given a large water bottle when you leave.
