Best travel time for Portugal
When is the best time to travel to Portugal? There isn’t THE one answer to this. It depends on which region of the country you want to travel to. Basically, the best time to travel to Portugal is from June to September.
At this time, it is pleasantly warm (to hot) across the country with little precipitation. You can also visit the island of Madeira, the Azores and the Algarve in winter. Depending on the region, you can also expect very pleasant temperatures in the months of April, May, October and November and spend a great holiday in the country.
Sightseeing in Portugal, hiking and cycling are most fun in spring and autumn when it’s not quite as hot. In addition, it is not so crowded in these months, a bit cheaper and quieter. If you fancy a skiing holiday, you should go to the north-east of the country in the mountains in winter. A beach holiday is generally highly recommended, especially in the months of July and August. The further south you go in the country, the longer the bathing season.
Climate in Portugal
You can generally travel to Portugal all year round. In the north of the country it is cooler and wetter than in the south of the country in the Algarve. The summers are very warm in the north, the winters are rather mild with a relatively large amount of precipitation. The climate in Portugal is strongly influenced by the Atlantic. While the climate in the south is classified as Mediterranean, towards the east it has a more continental character.
The climate in the Azores and Madeira is warm and humid all year round. There are only small temperature fluctuations here. In the following paragraph we will go into the different regions of the country in more detail and tell you what kind of climate you can expect.
Climate Portugal – North
The climate in the north of the country is Mediterranean. The summers are hot, especially in Porto, and the winter months are very mild. Due to the Atlantic wind, it is never too hot in summer. The warmest months are July and August with up to 25°C. However, similar temperatures can also be reached in June and September. A beach holiday is highly recommended at this time, even if the Atlantic is never warmer than 20° C (rather cooler). Northern Portugal has the least rain in July and August.
In autumn and spring you can expect mild temperatures with a maximum of 18°C. In winter it never gets too cold in northern Portugal, with maximum temperatures of around 13°C. However, the winter months are very humid. From November to January you can expect an average of 18 days of rain. The best time to travel to northern Portugal is from July to September. But even in the months of May and October you can still expect very pleasant temperatures.
Climate Portugal – West
In the west of Portugal the weather is very changeable and much cooler than in the south. The summers are nice and warm with up to 28°C and a pleasant Atlantic wind. However, it cools down significantly at night. Winters are very mild and wet in this region. The warmest months are July, August and September. It is coolest in western Portugal in January, February and December. The region also has the most rain between November and February.
In the months of March, April, May and October we were often in the west of the country around Lisbon, Ericeira and Peniche. We had the best time in May. It rained much less and was sometimes really warm. In all other months it was very humid, significantly cooler and it rained more often. The best travel time for the west of the country is from June to September. But the months of April, May and October can also be very pleasant.
Climate Portugal – inland
The interior is heavily influenced by the Castilian Plateau in Spain. Here you can clearly feel the temperature difference between winter and summer. Winters are quite cool and often very windy in this region of the country. It is not uncommon for there to be snow in the Sierra da Estrela from December to April. The warm summer, on the other hand, has temperatures of up to 28°C. If you are traveling in the interior of the Alentejo, you can encounter temperatures with peaks of over 40°C.
Climate Portugal – South
We love the south coast of the country. You can vacation here all year round. The Algarve enjoys a Mediterranean climate. The range of hills in the northern part of the Algarve protect the coast from strong winds. As a result, the winters are very short and mild. Less than 10°C are usually not reached here. In summer you can look forward to long, hot and sunny days.
Due to the cool breeze of the Atlantic, such temperatures are also bearable. During the day the thermometer can climb above the 30°C mark. At night it only cools down to around 25°C. The best travel time for southern Portugal (Algarve) is from May to October. But you can also expect a very pleasant climate in the Algarve in the months of April and November.
The further north you go in the country, the wetter it gets. However, precipitation decreases sharply from north to south. While up to 3,000 mm of precipitation is reached in the north, it is usually only 400 mm in the south. Most rain falls between November and March. Summers, on the other hand, are generally very dry, with the exception of the mountains in the north-east.
Portugal is on the Atlantic. This means that you have to reckon with rather cool water temperatures. The Portuguese coast reaches a maximum of 20°C, as there are unfortunately no warming sea currents (e.g. the Gulf Stream). The best months for a beach holiday are between June and August in the west of the country. The bathing season is significantly longer in the Algarve. Here you can expect pleasant water temperatures between May and October. The further south, the warmer and the longer the bathing season.
