Do you miss traveling so much? Then simply bring the holiday feeling into your home! There are plenty of ways to bring the travel feeling back into your interior, but you can also do a lot yourself to get into the holiday atmosphere. Here you will find the best tips to create that holiday feeling at home!
Creating a holiday feeling at home: these are the best tips
Take a travel quiz
There are a lot of crazy online travel quizzes being organized these days. This way you test your world knowledge, where you can often win great prizes. With a travel quiz you are often busy for 1 to 2 hours, and during a quiz you imagine yourself elsewhere in the world for a while. Grab a glass of wine, take a quiz with friends and make it a fun evening. It is the ideal activity to do at home.
Stock up on foreign snacks
How nice is it to try out foreign snacks for an afternoon? Go to a Portuguese shop and buy some pastel de natas, bake your own Spanish churros or put together a cheese board with the best French cheeses. You can also score typical American snacks at numerous web shops. Of course you can also implement this in dinner. How about South American ceviche, an Indonesian rice table or a Thai curry?
Drinks with foreign beers
It is also very cool to do a beer tasting with foreign beers. Think Chang (Thailand), Bintang (Indonesia), Sol (Mexico), Carlton (Australia) and Guinness (Ireland), but you can of course try many more options. You can of course also do this with wine, soft drinks or cocktails.
Learn another language
Are you at home a lot these days? Then this is the ideal time to learn another language. Grab Duolingo or take some online lessons and who knows, in a few months you may already be speaking a word of Spanish, French or Italian. It is also useful to watch films in the desired language, so that you also hear the sounds well. And after a few months, buy some children’s books in the language. That way you learn it extra fast!
Give your interior a makeover
It is of course also very cool to transform your interior into a foreign style. Do you love the Balinese style? Then provide many plants and natural materials in the house, opt for wooden blinds and paint the house in a neutral color. Do you like the Scandinavian style? Then opt for bright spaces, neutral window decoration and clean lines. Do you just love the South African style? Then go for brown earth tones and warm yellow, opt for furniture made of woven rattan and ensure round shapes.
Compile a bucket list
Nothing is better than putting together a cool bucket list in which you work out exactly which countries you want to discover in the coming years. Or maybe you want to visit very specific places or experience certain festivities? Think of trekking to Machu Picchu in Peru, celebrating Carnival in Rio de Janeiro or experiencing the festival of the dead in Mexico. I regularly make a bucket list myself and I immediately get a wonderful holiday feeling, even if I’m just sitting at home on the couch.
Read some wonderful travel books
Plop on the couch with a cup of tea and spend hours reading a good travel book. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon! In this article you will find the best travel books of the moment, but of course you can also purchase my e-book ‘How to plan a world trip’. In this book you will find everything you need to know about planning and making a world trip, full of useful tips and beautiful photos of my own world trip.
Buy some travel magazines
You can find many wonderful travel magazines, where you dream away to the most beautiful destinations in the world. Some best-known travel magazines are the National Geographic Traveler and the Lonely Planet Traveler. But you can choose from many more great magazines. Think Salt Magazine if you like to travel off the beaten track or Bergen Magazine if you love the mountains. In addition, there are many magazines that are specifically about certain countries or continents: America Magazine about North America, Asia Magazine about Asia and the Taste of Italy for everyone who is crazy about Italian life. So plenty of choice!
Have a bite in a restaurant with international cuisine
Have lunch or dinner in a restaurant with international cuisine. Think of a Mexican restaurant for some delicious tacos or a Surinamese toko where you can eat delicious roti. There are enough choices to imagine yourself in another country through food and drink. And preferably choose a restaurant where they have also implemented the country in question in the interior. This way you really forget that you are in your own country!
Plan the next trip
The best tip to create the holiday feeling at home is of course by planning your next trip. I can spend weeks planning a tour. In which accommodations will you sleep? What will the route be? And which activities do you really not want to miss during the trip? It is wonderful to read other travel blogs about the best tips, but I can also spend hours scrolling through all the travel photos on Instagram to put together my trip.
